Sarah Beth Durst is the author of Drink, Slay, Love
Sarah Beth Durst is the author of Drink, Slay, Love (coming Sept 2011), Enchanted Ivy, and Ice from Simon & Schuster, as well as Into the Wild and its sequel Out of the Wild from Penguin Young Readers. She has been writing fantasy stories since she was ten years old and holds an English degree from Princeton University, where she spent four years studying English, writing about dragons, and wondering what the campus gargoyles would say if they could talk. Sarah lives in Stony Brook, New York, with her husband and children.
Sweet or salty?
Sweet, preferably involving milk chocolate.
Any pets?
Yes, a somewhat-evil cat named Perni.
TV or movie?
Movie: Star Wars. TV show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (or the sadly short-lived Life and Times of
Juniper Lee, which was essentially a cartoon Buffy minus the angst).
Think quick, describe Drink, Slay, Love in 5 words or less!
Vampire girl stabbed by were-unicorn.
Where did the idea behind Drink, Slay, Love come from?
I had the idea that unicorns are natural vampire hunters. Seriously, look at them! Built-in stake!
Clearly, their fluffy, shiny reputation is mere propaganda to hide their true purpose as vampire
slayers...
I loved Pearl. Was she based on someone you know?
Thankfully, no. She's funny, fearless, and mostly evil. My technique for writing her was basically to
ask myself, "What would I never, ever do or say." And that's what Pearl would do and say. I loved
writing her. She's pretty much made of snark, and she doesn't suffer fools. But I wouldn't want to
meet her in a dark alley.
Any plans for future books/sequels?
My next novel (coming Sept 2012 from Simon & Schuster) is a YA standalone fantasy called
VESSEL. It's about a girl who is destined to sacrifice herself so that her clan's goddess can inhabit her
body... but her goddess never comes.
What is one book you think everyone should read? Why?
Mine. :) Seriously, though, I think there's no one book for everyone. I don't even think there's one
book for one person at all times of his/her life. People read for different reasons: to be entertained, to
be moved, to escape, to be grounded, to be comforted, to be pushed out of their comfort zone, etc.
Personally, I read to experience the impossible, to have an adventure, and to remember there's magic in
the world.
What is your favorite part of the holiday season?
My favorite part is making cookies. Every December, my mom and I always bake sugar cookies cut
with the most randomly shaped cookie cutters we can find -- my favorite is a lobster -- and then
decorated with colored sugar and sprinkles. They come out totally inedible, but it's tradition!
If you could celebrate the Holiday season anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why?
At home with all my family around me. It's my favorite place to be.
Thanks so much for interviewing me!
